Pens Take Down Bears, 4-2 in Penalty-Laden Affair

As the season winds down, the Bears take to the ice to try and improve their position in the standings. No better chance to achieve this than to take down the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The first period left much to be desired from the Bears. Despite three power play chances, the Bears only mustered up four shots on goal. To make matters worse, the Penguins scored late in the period, just eight seconds into a power play.

Dany Sabourin did his best to keep his team in it despite multiple penalties against the Bears. But the team fell into a two-goal hole when the Bears turned the puck over in their zone. The Penguins took over and out-muscled the Bears to a goal.

But it wasn’t all bad news as Kyle Greentree deflected a Patrick McNeill shot to finally get the Bears on the board. Greentree followed it up with a power play goal thanks to a juicy rebound by Brad Thiessen.

The third period was more of an equal playing ground for the two teams than the other two periods. But sadly, the Penguins regained their lead with a power play goal less than seven minutes left in the third period. An empty net goal put the final nail in the coffin and the Bears dropped their third game in a row, 4-2. Better luck next time.

Tonight’s Notes:

  • Keep an eye on the goaltending situation. Michal Neuvirth left the game with an injury last night and everyone is waiting to hear news on his injury and a possible recall of Sabourin.
  • Ryan Potulny took a big hit from Joey Mormina during the second period. He was down on the ice and left the game but thankfully returned later in the game.
  • Kevin Marshall and Zach Sill dropped the gloves during the third period. It was mostly a wrestling match as both guys were thrown around.
  • Plenty of power plays to talk about tonight. Nineteen combined power plays tonight tells you all you need to know. The Bears only scored once on nine power plays. The Penguins capitalized on three of ten power plays.

Three stars of the game:

1. Ben Street (WBS)
2. Kyle Greentree (HER)
3. Geoff Walker (WBS)
