2014 SHOEY Awards: Social Media Awards
We are four days into voting for our first ever SHOEY Awards and all races are still really close, especially the social media awards. There are three categories that fall under the social media awards: Tweet of the Year, Tweeter of the Year, and Social Media Champion. Three, it’s a magic number. Will that magic wear off on some of our nominees?
Tweet of the Year
Having an awesome time working with rescue dogs and @StrachanStrays . Especially with this little girl Trinity! pic.twitter.com/JnNljirldr
— Nate Schmidt (@nateschmidt29) January 29, 2014
This is just beyond cute. The tweet is from the Strachan Strays photo shoot, where Schmidty was beyond cute with the dogs. Tyson Strachan with Michael Latta
Great day off activity with Raja and @Latta17 #geeksquad #jigsawpuzzle pic.twitter.com/YpEGzT1q8a
— Tyson Strachan (@tstracks) March 3, 2014
Tyson, Michael, and Tyson’s rescue, Raja, all spent their day off making a jigsaw puzzle that looks a lot like “Where’s Waldo?”
Brandon Segal and Patrick Wellar

“Patrick Wants To Ride is the story of a boy who loves Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and dreams about the day when he will be big enough to ride on one and go touring with Mom and Dad.” Why do I feel this book fits Wellar perfectly? Julien Brouillette
The last 48 hours will be something I will always remember. Thank you so much everyone for your kind words. It is truly appreciate!

A nice tweet from a guy who finally got his shot this past season. How can you not like this tweet?
Asked the lady at the front desk what the date was…She replied “you’re obviously single”. Happy Valentines Day to all you lovers out there

Sad and funny at the same time. Maybe Selena Gomez will still take you up on that offer, Latts! Patrick Wellar

Ouch. Just ouch…
Tweeter of the Year
Tomas Kundratek (@Kundrc84)
Tomas has been out for most of the season with an ACL tear, but still has kept up on Twitter with tweets about his recovery. Not to mention all of his retweets of some of the cutest and funniest things on Twitter. We hope to see Kundy back next season 100% healthy and playing a lot in the NHL, but hope the tweets don’t let up anytime soon.
Michael Latta (@Latta17)
Michael Latta has to be one of the funniest and most involved hockey players on Twtter today. Between chirps on teammates, to catching teammates slippin, Latta’s tweets are top notch. Please never stop tweeting, Michael
Joel Rechlicz (@TheRecker19)
Recker was off Twitter for almost two years before former Bear Graham Mink helped Joel out getting him back on the social network. Sporting a John Wayne icon, Rechlicz reminded people of his golf skills, showed fans the “Ice Cowboys” of former Hershey teams, and told BOB he’s sick of his “I’ll get the tab next time” ways all within a month of coming back to Twitter. Our personal favorite? His bio line: “shootout specialist.”
Patrick Wellar (@pwellar33)
Patrick Wellar was one of the first Bears on Twitter back when Chris Bourque, Patrick McNeill, and Wellar all joined around the same time. Since then, Wellar’s tweets have been A1. Always a guy that will wish a teammate a happy birthday or congratulate someone on a call-up to the big show, @pwellar33’s tweets shows the high level of class the guy has.
Garrett Mitchell (@Mitchy1_0)
After being sidelined early in the season, Mitchell has been extremely active on the site that only allows 140 characters. The forward was always promoting upcoming events that benefited local charities and staying involved in the community.
Dane Byers (@byzee34)
Dane Byers was the first Bears captain in team history to be on Twitter while sporting the “C” on his sweater. He’s a guy whose tweets might have gone unnoticed at times, but always had something good to say. Hopefully Byers will be back next season so we can enjoy his tweets from Chocolate Town, USA.
Social Media Champion
Tomas Kundratek and Garrett Mitchell
Kundratek and Mitchell both sustained season ending injuries very early into the season, but that didn’t keep the two of them off of Twitter. Both interacted with fans and kept Bears fans up to date on their progress while rehabbing. Both are also up for Tweeter of the year.
David Leggio
David Leggio went viral this season after his spot on impression of NBC hockey analyst Pierre McGuire was picked up by national media. With over 50k views on YouTube, it’s safe to say that the netminder is the leading candidate for this award.
Joel Rechlicz
Rechlicz is such a fan favorite in Hershey, whenever he does something of note, it blows up online. Our posts on his great fight against Brett Gallant and his first goal in 800+ days blew up, giving Recker a nom for Social Media Champ.
Michael Latta
Latta is the only nominee up for all three social media awards for one reason: he’s always involved. Between tweeting, to adding filters to photos on Instagram, if Michael is not at the rink, he’s probably online.
