Paul Carey Out for Season After Shoulder Surgery
The Hershey Bears announced Saturday afternoon Paul Carey will be out the rest of the season after having shoulder surgery Friday at Hershey Medical Center. Carey, 27, in 44 games with Hershey this season posted a scoring line of 13-18-31, fourth best on Hershey’s roster.
The Boston native tore his labrum in a game against Bridgeport last week. In July, Carey signed a one-year, two-way contract with Washington, starting the season in Hershey before earning two recalls to the Capitals. Hershey will play Carey’s old team Providence in a back-to-back tonight and tomorrow at Giant Center.
Press release:
HERSHEY, Pa. – The Hershey Bears announced today that forward Paul Carey will miss the remainder of the 2015-16 season and any subsequent playoffs following successful shoulder surgery. The announcement was made by Bears president/general manager Doug Yingst.
The 27-year-old Carey suffered the injury on February 10, finished the game, but has not appeared in the lineup since.
“I tore my labrum last week against Bridgeport,” Carey said. “The best thing to do was to go under the knife right away and get the surgery done. I did that right here in Hershey and everything went well. I have five to six months before I can play hockey again.”
The surgery was performed by Dr. Aman Dhawan at the Penn State Hershey Bone and Joint Institute on Friday, February 19, per the recommendation of team physician Dr. Kevin Black.
The 6-0, 175-pound native of Boston, Massachusetts ranks fourth on the Bears in scoring with 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in 44 games. He earned a four-game recall to the Washington Capitals and scored his first NHL goal on February 6 against the New Jersey Devils.
