Injured Bears Annihilated in Norfolk, 6-1

Shane Owen looks on as the Admirals pot their sixth goal of the night.

Well…yeah, that was bad.

It didn’t always look so bleak. Steve Pinizzotto put the Bears on the board first. Earlier he had been whistled a boarding call but he made up for it by scoring on his next shift. Unfortunately, the Admirals tied it up before the end of first twenty minutes. And that started the roll of unanswered goals by Norfolk.

The penalties began racking up in the second and third periods with the Bears on the wrong end of the calls. By the end of the second period, it was a 4-1 game in favor of Norfolk. It’s at this point that you really start thinking about all the injuries that are keeping Bears out of the game and wondering how many players might be playing through minor injuries.

Just to add insult to injury (literally), the Admirals came out fast for the final period and scored just 32 seconds in. That goal would mean the end of Jared DeMichiel’s game and Shane Owen was put in goal. Yes, the same Shane Owen that was signed this morning to a pro tryout contract. The intention was to just have him back-up DeMichiel tonight…but plans change. John Walton informs fans that Owen is not expected to be here long which means that either Braden Holtby or Semyon Varlamov is returning from injury soon.

In his clashing bright red pads, Owen stopped nine of ten shots through the remainder of the game. The only goal he let up came a little over halfway through the period. He lost sight of the puck and couldn’t dive across the crease in time. But, obviously, that’s not enough. Bears lose 6-1.

If anything, this game proves that the Bears need to talk a hard look at some goalies to possibly add before clear day. Granted, Holtby should be getting healthy soon, but what happens if we gets injured again? DeMichiel still has some developing to do and Todd Ford isn’t the kind of goalie you want to backstop you through playoffs.

But it’s probably best to deal with that when it comes.

Tonight’s Notes:

  • During the course of the game, Patrick Wellar and Pinizzotto were injured. Both left during the second period and never returned to the game. The good news is that the Bears have a few days to heal up before their next game on Saturday.
  • Mathieu Perreault played his first game with Bears since December 4th.
  • After playing today, Shane Owen became the sixth goaltender to see playing time for the Bears this season. He is also the seventh goaltender to dress for the Bears (Bobby Jarosz backed up DeMichiel on February 26th, but never played).

Lines and Pairings:

Kane – Aucoin – Pinnizzotto
Greentree – Joudrey – Willsie
Lacroix – Perreault – Bouchard

Souray – Collins
Orlov – Wellar
McNeill – Fahey

Actual three stars of the game:

  1. Rock Bottom? Really? Hershey is #3 in the league in points with 80. Yes there have been ugly games recently but this team is still a top CC contender in my opinion.

You have to remember to not compare this years team to last years team. Not many AHL teams are built with that much offense. To say that there aren’t goal scorers here is just ridiculous. Yes Lacroix, Carroll, and Rechlicz are not going to score much. Obviously. But Kugryshev and Bruess are still very young developing players that will be solid in time. And it isn’t like they are (or were in Bruess’s case) getting power play minutes. And the power play is where 25% of goals are scored.

Hershey is #6 in the AHL in goals scored…sure some players are more responsible than others but the Bears have 6 players with 10+ goals and a few more just a goal or 2 away. That isn’t bad. It isn’t great but it isn’t bad.

  2. Really enjoy you work!!I think the goaltending last nite was probably the worst i’ve seen in the 47 years i’ve been watching and attending games.Dimichiel looked so outclassed it was embarrassing. He is as ready for this level as I am.He was very shaky against Albany.Ford is fair, but definitely an echl goalie(he leaves so many rebounds). It would really be scary funny to see him in an NHL game.
I know i sound very negative, but we are built for a Calder Cup run and with this situation,we will be ousted quickly.I’m certain that Mr.Yingst will be working the phones looking for the answer.
Another major concern is he offense. We really have too many players who can’t score at this level.Lacroix,Carroll,Rome,Reichlitz,Kugershev,Breuss(when healthy),deKasrozza, and really Joudrey. It’s really amazing that we are 3rd in the league.Getting Matty P and AG back will certainly help, but this is not the same team we were and the league will have no pushovers in the 1st round,as we’ve had the past couple years.
If we are successful, this might be the most satisfying one of them all.Good Luck to the Boys.Get healthy and back to playing Hershey Bear Hockey.

  3. Interesting you give Dan Stuck a star. I could make a joke of him dealing with all the injuries he’s stuck with. (Cue: groan)

Seriously, hope the walking wounded in Hershey get well soon. I especially want Varly and Holtby to get well. (Okay, Varly’s not a Bear at the moment.) The goal tending situation in the Caps organization is currently very scary, as in one Michal Neuvirth injury from disaster, until one of those guys recovers and is back to snuff.

  4. If “rock bottom” exists in Hershey, this may be it.

No worries though, Doug Yingst already is on his way to Providence, RI to bring back with him Nolan Schaefer.

Or, maybe it just isn’t Hershey’s year. I doubt it though.
