Hershey Eliminated from Playoffs by 2-1 OT Loss

With the Bears facing possible elimination tonight, everyone was nervous.
They only got more nervous when the Charlotte Checkers scored just 35 seconds into the first period. The Bears failed to clear the zone and the Checkers took advantage. Braden Holtby stopped the first shot but a rebound bounced past him. But the Bears held off the Checkers for the rest of period and did a good job of not letting that early goal rattle them.
The Bears also escaped the second period without letting the Checkers score any more goals. I say escape because they were playing Russian roulette with how many penalties they were taking. The penalty kill unit stood up Charlotte and the game moved on with no scoring change.
The good news was that Hershey only needed one goal to tie it up. The bad news? It was time for the third period, which is (as we learned in Game 5 on Friday) notoriously an all Charlotte period.
Time was the enemy and just when things started looking grim, the Bears finally broke the shutout and tied the game! Keith Aucoin won the face-off and Brian Fahey took a shot from the top of the right face-off circle to bring the crowd to its feet.
The final few minutes of regulation ticked away and the already nerve-wracking game became more nerve-wracking by moving on to sudden death overtime for the first time this series.
It wasn’t Hershey’s year this year. As sad as it is, Hershey fans have been spoiled by their team. Eleven Calder Cup Championships will help the organization hold its head high even though we will not be watching Bears hockey in May for once. We have some of the best fans in the world, a fact proven by the round of applause the crowded Giant Center gave their team even after losing.
Until next season…
Tonight’s Notes:
- A telling stat from Tim Leone: The Bears went 1 for 26 on the power play against the Checkers during this series. To have that many opportunities pass by is never a good thing.
- Even though the Oklahoma City Barons were eliminated from playoffs today, Alexandre Giroux scored his 52nd career Calder Cup playoff goal, which moved him into second place in the history of the AHL.
- The penalty kill unit really did its part to keep the game as close as it was. Without them holding off Charlotte’s five big power plays, it would have been a very different game.

I just wanted to say how proud I am of our team. They fought hard all season and still managed to win a ton of games despite all the adversity. I know next year will be a different team (I fear/suspect that Gordo, for one, will be gone) but it is always exciting to see the new guys and what they bring to the table.
Additionally, congratulations on a great season of blogging! I really look forward to reading your coverage, and your photos are top notch. As EmilyB says, I hope you keep up through the summer so we can stay current on the happenings in Bears Nation. Thanks so much for a great year!
It seems like it’s been forever since I’ve seen us get eliminated from the playoffs……… We’ve been so spoiled here (especially with goaltenders) making it weird to see the Bears lose ANY games!
It’s alright though, we’re gonna send up whoever we can to DC, and take the bigger, shinier cup 🙂
Also, huge congratulations to Alexandre Giroux!
Here’s to next season. As Tracey says, we can’t win the Calder Cup every year, and this year, the Bears sent a lot of their key pieces up to the Big Club, and lost others to free agency, etc.
I’m looking forward to seeing who gets slotted in next year, through the draft, or through trades, or free agent signings; the Bears will be back, and they will be strong. I’m proud of the Bears this season.
To the SHoE crew,
Congratulations on a terrific rookie season. Your blog has been top notch all year and I have enjoyed the excellent coverage of every Bears game through words and pictures.
The Bears are a great team with a great history and now they have a great blog too.
Well done, hope you keep up some summer coverage too.
@JW90 I’d love to have Carroll back. I’m not sure what Hershey will do with him but I hope he sticks around.
Thank you Hershey for yet another awesome year! This just wasn’t our year, we can’t win the Cup every year! Don’t get your hopes up the rest of the league, Hershey will be back next year!!!
WOOOOOO!!!! GO BEARS!!!
Such a shame… We played hard all year, and with Kugryshev, Lacroix, Mitchell (etc) the future is bright. Kathryn do you think Carroll will be back next year?
Your team has set the standard for all that the other 29 teams in the league dream to be. Rabid fan base, championships, coverage from here to DC and back (and great bloggers too). You guys were going to be a tough out. From a fan that has seen his share of early exits (mostly from Chocolate & White) I say congrats on a great season. I have a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach that Hershey is going to load up huge next season. Have a great summer.
