Strong Start Pushes Bears Past IceCaps, 3-2

The Bears celebrate Boyd Kane’s shorthanded goal. All photos by Kyle Mace.

When the Bears played the St. John’s IceCaps for the first time, they left with only one point out of four. Tonight they got a chance to earn some more in front of the Hershey faithful.

The Bears are known for their strong starts and they did not disappoint tonight. Mike Carman scored first off of a Garrett Mitchell feed from behind the goal. With a few minutes left in the first period, Boyd Kane scored a shorthanded breakaway goal to give the Bears a two goal lead at the break.

The second period started off nicely with a one-timer power play goal from Ryan Potulny. Unfortunately, it was all St. John’s after that. Jason King and Aaron Gagnon scored on Dany Sabourin to make it a much closer game after two periods.

Penalties were called back and forth all night. But the penalty kill unit stood tall and the score didn’t change. Bears win, 3-2!

Tonight’s Notes:

  • First thing: The Hershey Bears Booster Club will be making a bus trip to the Washington Capitals game on April 5th when the Caps play the Panthers. Cost is $122. Bus will leave at 3pm. Visit the Booster Club table this weekend for more details.
  • Goalies across the organization have been shuffled around this week. With Braden Holtby back with the Caps, the Bears signed Matt Tendler to an amateur tryout agreement to back up Sabourin.
  • As I mentioned above, the penalty kill unit was outstanding. The Bears didn’t allow a single power play goal despite six St. John’s power plays. The Bears themselves were 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
  • Finally, in ONE WEEK we’re helping to host a viewing party for the Bears’ games against the Binghamton Senators. Check out the event information and prepare to party for a good cause!
