Bears’ Losing Skid Continues with 6-4 Loss to Pirates

The former Captain and current Captain take a ceremonial face-off before the game.

So, this is it. We’re down to the final weekend of the regular season. First up: the Portland Pirates and the familiar faces of Ashton Rome and the Mayor of Chocolatetown, Dean Arsene. Here we go: Kyle Greentree started off the scoring with a shorthanded tally halfway through the first period. But the Pirates tied it up by the end of twenty minutes by scoring on a heavily screened Daren Machesney.

The second period was a big one for scoring. The Pirates quickly took a two goal lead thanks to a backdoor play and a scrambling Machesney. But David Civitarese earned his first professional goal and made it a close game once again. In the next few minutes, the Pirates regained their lead but the Bears quickly countered with a goal from Mike Carman to make it a one-goal game before the end of the second.

Ryan Potulny scored on the power play (I know, you’re shocked) in the third period. Unfortunately, the Pirates potted yet another goal a few minutes later. Ten combined goals was it for the night. Bears lose, 6-4.

Tonight’s Notes:

  • Good news on the injury front: Boyd Kane returned after missing one game with an injury. But even biggers new, Graham Mink returned to the line-up after missing fourteen games with an upper body injury.
  • Francis Verrault-Paul earned his first AHL point with an assist on Mike Carman’s goal.
  • Daren Machesney stopped a penalty shot attempt by Brett Sterling in the third period and prevented him from getting the hat trick.
  • Boyd Kane was issued a ten minute misconduct in the third period for unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Special team stats: The Bears went 1-for-5 on the power play. The Pirates went 2-for-3.
