Early Shorthanded Strike Downs Hershey, 1-0

Days after leap frogging the Penguins in the East Division standings, the Hershey Bears looked for a statement win against the 15-6-5 Springfield Falcons. Matt Calvert scored shorthanded in the opening period, and it proved to be the games’ only goal in a 1-0 Falcons win.

Springfield went 0-for-2 on the power play in the opening period, but would tally late while shorthanded. After the puck took an unfortunate bounce on Garrett Stafford, Matt Calvert went off to the races on a breakaway. He waited out Braden Holtby and sneaked a low shot around his right leg pad.

Despite eight minutes of man-advantage time for the Falcons in the middle frame, they were unsuccessful in capitalizing and extending their lead. Hershey only had five shots on goal during the stanza for a low two period total of 12.

Springfield carried their 1-0 lead into the third period where they eyed an insurance marker. The Falcons failed to find the insurance marker, but the Bears failed to find pay-dirt and fell to the Springfield Falcons 1-0.

With 2:57 left in regulation, Boyd Kane was called for an offensive zone, double-minor high sticking penalty to erase any chances for the Bears to comeback. Aside from the crucial high stick, Kane was also whistled for two tripping minors during the game.

Following the Bears’ 1-0 defeat Saturday, Kane climbed to third on the team in penalty minutes with 44. The two players above him are Steve Oleksy and Garrett Mitchell. However unlike Oleksy and Mitchell, Kane has not fought in any game this entire season.
