Hershey Bears Movember Campaign in Full Force
It’s become a nationwide awareness and fund raising effort for men’s health and ten members of the Hershey Bears are taking part. “Movember” gets men to grow mustaches in the month of November to increase conversation about men’s health, getting them to take action with visits to the doctor, and to raise money for research for prostate and testicular cancer. Last year alone, the Movember campaign raised over $147 million.
Hershey’s goaltender David Leggio is leading the Bears Movember efforts. “We are fortunate to be in a situation where people look up to us. At the end of the day, we’re entertainers. Last year I did a fund raiser that was very important to me. When you in the community, if you go to a hospital or a school or even a hockey practice your helping kids or people who are sick. It’s nice to be able to do.”
“Movember is huge,” said the Bears Joel Rechlicz, who has been recognized for his community service with the Man of the Year award two seasons ago. “I went on the web site and couldn’t believe how big it is. It’s a good cause toward men’s health. If we can try and raise some money that would be great.”
The players are also having fun growing the mustaches. “Some of them can look pretty bad,” said Bears veteran Jeff Taffe. “I wish we had bets going to see who can raise the most money. It’s all in good fun and for a good cause.”
Leggio and trainer Dan “Beaker” Stuck have also organized t-shirts that will be sold at Giant Center with a “a really cool design,” as Leggio put it. The proceeds with go to the local cancer institutions in Hershey.
