For the first time since winning the Calder Cup in 2010 at Giant Center, Michael Neuvirth is back in a Hershey Bears uniform. “Neuvy” will get a rehab start with Hershey on Saturday after injuring his right ankle during warm-ups at the Caps game on November 29. Since the freak fall, he’s missed six games with the Caps. Neuvirth was with the Bears during morning skate on Friday before heading to Wilkes-Barre that night for the Bears game against the Penguins.
Stepping out onto the ice Friday morning brought back lots of great memories. “It was great,” said Neuvirth. “I knew right away it would be nice to get back after the great years I had here. I’m excited to be playing in front of the great Bears fans. When I showed up this morning I saw the locker room where we celebrated the Calder Cup. Just great memories.”
David Leggio started Friday’s game, giving Neuvirth he nod on Saturday as his ankle continues to heal. “I haven’t played in a couple weeks. When the coaches gave me the opportunity to get into an AHL game, I took it. Games are much better than practice. I take it as preparation for the NHL level. Obviously I always want to help the Bears get a win tomorrow.”
Neuvy continues to make progress on his injured ankle as well. “It feels good and getting better every day. Like I said, a game is different than practice. It’s going to be tough but I’m going to be ready. I felt good today and look forward to feeling even better tomorrow.”
Saturday’s crowd is sure to give Neuvy a warm welcome, as one of the stars of the Calder Cup teams. Neuvirth will wear #1 for the Chocolate and White.
Weather permitting, faceoff Saturday night is at 7pm.
