Former Hershey Bears forward Chad Wiseman was named the first head coach of the New York Riveters of the National Women’s Hockey League on Tuesday. Wiseman played for Hershey in the 2006-07 season, posting 35 points in 48 regular season games. He also played in 16 playoff games during Hershey’s run to the Calder Cup Finals that season.
In a press release from the NWHL, Wiseman said “Women’s hockey right now in North America is arguably the fastest growing sport. This league is not only great for women’s hockey, but hockey in general.”
In March of this year, Dani Rylan and 2015 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Angela Ruggiero announced a womens hockey league, the NWHL. This league is the first of it’s kind in the United States as the league has promised to pay their players.
Wiseman finished his career in 2013 with the Albany Devils and now takes over one of the four teams in the NWHL. “I’m just excited to get started- to get down to NY, meet the players, and get training camp under way,” Wiseman said in the release. “The next 6 weeks will be busy making sure I have everything I need and I’m prepared when I get down to NY. I’m a strong believer in preparation and attention to detail.”
The Riveters kick off their season on October 11th against the Connecticut Whale in Connecticut.
