Vitek Vanecek faces 39 shots in ECHL rehab stint with Stingrays
Netminder Vitek Vanecek was on rehab assignment with the South Carolina Stingrays Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina against the Swamp Rabbits.
Vanecek was playing his first game since the NHL preseason after sustaining a lower-body injury during training camp. The Czech Republic native made 36 saves on 39 shots in a 3-2 loss to the Swamp Rabbits.
The 21-year-old faced a barrage of shots, including 18 in the second period. South Carolina took a 2-0 lead by the 7th minute of the second period, but Greenville would storm back for two of their own in the middle frame.
Joe Houk would beat Vitek glove side to make it 2-1, then Chad Duchesne would deflect one into the back of the SC net to make it tied up at 2-2. Joe Houk would score the game-winner for the Swap Rabbits from below the dots, squeaking it past Vanecek’s head with under three minutes remaining.
Vanecek is expected to return to Hershey soon and rejoin the Bears.
