Alexandre Giroux returns to North America, signs in LNAH
Alexandre Giroux is back in North America for the first time since 2012. The man who broke multiple American Hockey League and Hershey Bears records on the way to two Calder Cups, and an MVP award has spent the past six seasons in Europe with various teams.
Giroux, 37, played last season in France with Grenoble after spending time with Medvescak Zagreb in Croatia, HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland, and Dinamo Riga in Latvia.
The Quebec native now comes back across the Atlantic to join the Thetford Assurancia of the North American Hockey League. The league was called “Canada’s Toughest Hockey League” in 2016 by Vice Sports.
Thetford is one of the league’s founding teams, established in 1996. The league currently has five teams based all across Quebec.
In the 2008-09 season, Giroux broke multiple records with Hershey, including most goals scored in a season for a Hershey Bear (60), most consecutive games with a point as a Hershey Bear (23 games, 44 points), most consecutive games to score a goal in the AHL (15), and won the league scoring title and MVP award that season.
Giroux fittingly sits 12th all-time in goals for a Hershey Bears with 166 in 229 games played.
