Game Recap: Bears vs. Bruins 11/27/19.

After dropping both games on the weekend road trip to Bridgeport and Providence, the Bears returned Home to Giant center on Wednesday night to try and exact revenge on the Bruins. Who defeated Hersey 6-3 on Sunday night.

Bears came into Wednesday night’s contest right at .500, with a 8-8-2-2 record. Looking to climb back up the latter in the Atlantic division. Mike Sgarbossa broke the ice for the Bears midway through the 1st period on the power play. Picking up right where he left off after briefly being called up to Washington for 2 games. He now leads the team in points with 18, and leads the way with 3 power play goals on the season.

After a rather tame first twenty minutes, the Bears and Bruins opened up the scoring floodgates in the middle frame. Seven total goals were scored in the second period, 4 from the Bears and 3 from the Bruins. Brian Pinho ended up with a multi point effort, after recording an assist on the Sgarbossa goal in the first, and then netting his own on a breakaway, in the first minute of the second. And speaking of that first minute of play, just nine seconds later, Joe Snively hit pay dirt off a juicy rebound from Max Legace. But after getting out to a breathable three goal lead, the Bears surrendered two quick ones of their own. As Brendan Woods put one past Copley, for his second goal of the season. Followed up by a greasy goal from the left corner by Joona Koppanen.

But wait, there’s more. The emotional roller coaster didn’t stop there. As just a few minutes later, Erik Burgdoerfer’s seeing eye shot from the point, beat Legace to make the score 4-2 Hershey. But after a costly penalty, Urho Vaakanainen kept the scoring going, as he netted his third goal this week to bring the Bruins within one. But the Bears weren’t quite finished yet. As Phillipe Maillet recorded his third goal of the season to put the bears up 5-3 going into the third.

In the third however, the Bears began to unravel defensively. As they saw their 5-3 lead quickly evaporate by the 11 minute mark of the third period. The Bears fought till the end however. Getting solid chances on Max Legace in the final 10 minutes. And eventually breaking through on a fantastic feed from Sgarbossa to Snively, to tie the game at 6 and force overtime.

Both teams with great chances in the extra session, but it was still not enough to settle the score, as the contest headed to the shootout. The Bears would eventually fall in the shootout and drop the contest by a final score of 7-6.

The Bears are in action next on Saturday night against Bellville at Giant Center.
