Capitals-Bears Gain Brandon Segal for 2013-14

The Washington Capitals announced Tuesday the signing of AHL veteran Brandon Segal to a one year, two-way contract. Segal participated in 73 games with the Connecticut Whale last season and battled against the Bears in the 2006 Calder Cup Finals as a member of the Milwaukee Admirals.

Segal brings leadership at the AHL level, a right handed forward shot and 103 games of NHL experience to the organization’s depth chart. Hershey was needing a top six, right shot forward, which Segal falls into the category of, almost as badly as the Capitals need a second line center. With the addition of the 30-year-old, the Bears roster this season is one of the most complete the Chocolate and White have had an recent years.

He also is an AHL veteran, which makes Hershey’s current vet total go from five to six, one over the limit you are allowed to dress per game. This could turn into a stick situation for Hershey at point during the season, but if a vet were to be called up, that would not cause conflict for new Head Coach Mike Haviland when filling out line-ups.

The power forward has earned two Calder Cup Championships in 2004 and 2012 with the Milwaukee Admirals and the Norfolk Admirals, giving him some experience in the playoffs which could help Hershey down the line in the chase for Calder number 12.
