Following a mid second period television timeout, the CBC broadcast for Hockeyville 2013 introduced Philipp Grubauer into the Washington Capitals’ first preseason game. Grubauer entered with his team trailing 2-0 after two second period goals were posted on Braden Holtby.
Grubauer earned the preseason win in a 4-3 decision which concluded in a four round shootout. He was a perfect 4-for-4 in save attempts during the skills competition.
Minutes after his entrance into the contest, the young 21 year-old goaltender impressed a capacity crowd of 3,000-plus with a breakaway stop on Evander Kane. Washington answered with two goals before the middle period expired to knot the game at 2-2. Stanislav Galiev appeared hungry from the opening puck drop and tallied the Caps’ second goal at the frame’s 14:32 mark.
Galiev crashed the goal mound and tipped a quick shot past Jets’ Eddie Pasquale, who played 43 games with the St. John’s IceCaps last season.
Although Galiev is not projected to crack the Washington Capitals’ roster, his play in the Kraft Hockeyville showdown likely left many of the Hershey faithful encouraged and excited. Other Hershey notables who also appeared in the game were Casey Wellman, Dane Byers, Steve Oleksy and Nate Schmidt.
The Caps are slated to play seven more preseason games before the puck officially drops on October 1st.
