Capitals re-sign Chandler Stephenson to a two-year contract

Forward Chandler Stephenson has been re-signed by the Washington Capitals on a two-year, $1.3 million contract.

Stephenson, 23, has spent parts of the last four seasons in Hershey, first joining the Bears on a PTO at the end of the 2013-14 season, scoring his first AHL goal in a game against Norfolk on the road. In 2014-15, the skillful centerman would spend the entire season in Hershey, but had part of his season cut short due to injury, playing 54 games, scoring 14 points.

Over the last two years, the Saskatoon native has seen action in 13 NHL games, including a nine-game stint in 2015-16. This past year, Stephenson scored 38 points in 72 games for Hershey.

The contract is a two-way deal the first season ($650k NHL, $125k AHL) and one-way in 2018-19 ($650k). Stephenson would need waivers to return to Hershey.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Chandler Stephenson to a two-year, $1.3 million contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Stephenson’s contract is two-way ($650,000/$125,000) during the 2017-18 season and one-way ($650,000) during the 2018-19 season.

Stephenson, 23, played in four games with Washington during the 2016-17 season and has appeared in 13 career games with the Capitals. The 6’0”, 204-pound center registered 38 points (10g, 28a) in 72 games with Hershey last season, setting career highs in points, goals, assists and games played. Stephenson ranked tied for third on the team in games played, fifth in assists and seventh in points. In addition, Stephenson recorded a career-long six-game point streak (3g, 3a) from Feb. 3 to Feb. 12 and registered a career-high three assists on Nov. 18 against Syracuse. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native has registered 81 points (25g, 56a) in 174 career AHL games with Hershey. He was drafted by the Capitals in the third round, 77th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.
