Paul Carey secures spot on New York Rangers roster
After a career year with the Hershey Bears last year, Paul Carey signed in the offseason with the New York Rangers. Carey put forth a strong showing in the Blueshirts’ camp and has earned himself a spot on New York’s opening night roster.
The 29-year-old forward finds himself on a Rangers team that lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Ottawa Senators, something he experienced with Washington as a late-season call-up for the Capitals short playoff run.
“I’m very pleased,” Carey said in an interview. “I had a great opportunity coming here in the offseason. Put a lot of work in back home. I think the coaches like my speed, the energy I can bring to the game. Also, I play a 200-foot game and make some plays out there.”
Rangers head coach Allan Vigneault was impressed with the former Bear. “His speed allowed him to get separation from checkers, get in there on the forecheck,” Vigneault said in an article published on the Rangers website. “He was physical when he needed to be. He was effective on the penalty kill.”
New York kicks off their season against the team that drafted Carey, the Colorado Avalanche, on October 5th at Madison Square Garden.
