Riley Barber’s mom, a breast cancer survivor, drops the puck on Pink the Rink right

Prior to Sunday night’s game, forward Riley Barber’s mom dropped the ceremonial puck. Stacy Barber, a breast cancer survivor, was greeted by her son at center ice to take the puck drop in front of a packed Giant Center crowd.

The two exchanged a hug before she dropped the puck. Hartford captain Joe Whitney joined the two of them for the photo opportunity.

Riley has been using pink tape this weekend on his stick during warm-ups and on the end of his stick during games. Stacy, a skating coach, is a six-year survivor.

“It was awesome,” Barber said after the game. “Anytime you can recognize somebody like that and for a cause like cancer and breast cancer, and the families affected by it’s always a great thing. Especially to raise awareness, I think hockey’s done a great job up in the NHL with Hockey Fights Cancer, with Hershey this is a great event put on and I know it meant a lot to her and it meant a lot to me.”

It was the first time she ever had the chance to drop the puck with Riley, as well. “It was a good drop though. I made sure she had to have a good drop.”

  1. This brought so much joy and, also sadness to my heart. I’m so thankful that you are a survivor!!! And, Riley is doing so well in hockey. The sadness is from missing your Mom and that she isn’t here to enjoy all your family. Sending my love, Stacy, and prayers for your continued good health.

  2. What a beautiful experience for u & ur son. So hard to believe he is all grown up. Our group is still together but do not play cards. We speak of ur Mom often & miss her. I’m sorry to hear that u have had breast cancer but incredibly happy that U r a survivor. I am very active as a volunteer with the American Cancer. My love, Toni
