Vanecek, Jonsson-Fjallby, give the Bears their seventh straight win.

The Hershey Bears looked to keep their impressive run of six straight wins alive, as they welcomed in the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday night.

The first period proved to be rather uneventful for both sides. Neither team was able to register a goal after the first 20 minutes of play. Leaving a 0-0 score on the board heading into the second period.

The second stanza in this contest seemed to be a lot like the first, slow and sluggish. The Bears were not getting very many chances generated in the offensive zone, and at many times had trouble even clearing their own zone.

“I just felt like we couldn’t string together two, three passes through the neutral zone, or on an entry,” head coach Spencer Carbery mentioned post-game. “Sometimes that happens to four or five guys, it was like it was 17 guys.”

In the latter half of the second period, the Chocolate and White got a breakthrough. Matt Moulson picked up his ninth goal of the campaign, on a Martin Fehervary slapper, to give the Bears a one goal advantage. Hershey held the lead up until the 18:35 mark when Springfield’s Henrik Borgstrom tied the game at one heading into the second intermission.

The Bears and Thunderbirds played a tightly contested game throughout the third period. Both sides got their fair share of chances, up until the last 10-minutes of the third when Springfield got a powerplay chance. Vitek Vanecek, who once again proved to be the backbone of this team, making multiple saves, to keep the struggling Bears in the game. The third ended with a 1-1 tie.

“We were on damage control for sure,” Carbery said.

In the overtime period, the Bears would stick it out. Getting four shots on net, and not allowing any in their end. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby was able to net the game-winner.

Hershey took home their seventh straight victory, remaining unbeaten in the month of December, and looking to continue that streak tomorrow afternoon in their rematch with the Thunderbirds.
