Chocolate Fix 10/12/2011

This is the first Chocolate Fix of the 2011-2012 regular season! And what a way to start out the season. The first two games are on the road and the Bears come home with 2 wins. The first was against the defending Calder Cup champion Senators, and the second was against the Penguins. How nice is that?

Tomorrow look for a unique post to get you ready for the home opener, a unique post that I’m pretty sure you won’t find anywhere else.

The Old Barn Hockey Show [OBHS]

  • Part 1 – Frank, Scott and Brock talk about the Bears opening weekend and the team in general.
  • Part 2 – Gregg Mace joins the boys. They interview Dan Kamal of the Winnipeg Jets who talks about the Jets and his job with CJOB.
  • Part 3 – A little wrap up on Bears talk and then on to the NHL. NHL talk includes discipline.

Mattias Sjogren is spending his first season in North America and doesn’t have any size issues. For him, smaller appears to be better. [PennLive]

And then he goes on to call Hershey a “…podunk town. There’s not much going on around here, so I think I’m just going to play hockey and stay at the hotel.” [Japers Rink]

Hey, Mattias.  Maybe you should check out Inside Hershey [blog, facebook, twitter].  Frances (who also happens to be a Bears season ticket holder) has plenty of ideas for things to do in the area.  For a touch more city life Harrisburg isn’t that far away.  I know it’s not DC, but I wouldn’t call it podunk either.

Our friends over at The Sports ‘Burger have player capsules for this season’s roster. [TSB]

Derek Meluzio has news on current and former Bears net minders. [PennLive]

Tim Leone had a great (as if we would expect it to be anything less) pre-season insert in the newspaper. This search should get you all the online versions. [PennLive]

  1. I wouldn’t be too hard on Sjogren, 1)he may have thought that no one would translate the interview, 2)the word he used in Swedish might not be as pejorative as “podunk”. Anyhow, I think many of the younger players have described Hershey the same way in the past (Varly, etc). The 717 is a beautiful place filled with the nicest people in PA, but not THAT much stuff going on.

    1. If you read the comments in the linked article you will see that the translator may have taken a little liberty in the translation. I really have no problem with it or that Sjogren thinks of it that way, but there are plenty of things to do in the area if you take the time to check it out. That’s why so many former players end up staying here or moving back to the area when they retire. I have no hard feelings toward him or think any less of him. I wanted a reaction from the readers whether it be to defend him, defend Hershey or anything inbetween. You provided what I was hoping to get from my writing, and I thank you for that. 🙂
