Eakin Could Be Another Skilled Center for Hershey

Cody Eakin achieved great success during his time in the Western Hockey League. This was made very clear when he was traded halfway through to the season from the Swift Current Broncos to the Kootenay Ice. Eakin held so much value that he was traded for Forward Christian Magnus, four prospects, and three draft picks.
Eakin first drew attention when he joined the Bears at the end of the 2009-2010 season and scored two goals in four games. He also played in five playoff games, but did not earn any points. However, he had already garnered excitement from the Hershey faithful.
This past season, Eakin was too busy leading his Kootenay Ice team through the WHL playoffs to join in Hershey’s playoff run. With the Ice, he racked up 11 goals and 16 assists in 19 games. If he is able to continue these numbers in a higher league, he could be destined for great things.
Despite the fact that Eakin had a quiet showing at this summer’s Capitals Development Camp, Bruce Boudreau did not have much criticism for him. But, Eakin will have to give it all he’s got during September’s rookie camp in order to beat the likes of Mathieu Perreault and Mattias Sjogren for a spot on Washington’s roster. Otherwise, he will likely be spending the season with Bears.
While he may be a third or fourth liner in Washington, Eakin could have a chance at the top lines in Hershey. He will have to put up some big numbers in order to oust Keith Aucoin and Ryan Potulny, but Hershey could use a center like him and he certainly thinks that he is ready for high-pressure situations. He has his sights set on reaching Washington’s roster and he seems set on doing whatever he can to make it happen soon.
In the meantime, it definitely wouldn’t hurt Hershey to have Eakin’s skills on their side. The Bears had a little shortage of centers last year and then they lost Andrew Joudrey in the offseason. More open spots means that there will be plenty of chances for Eakin to prove himself.

@Greg: Agreed! A lot of uncertainty about both Washington and Hershey’s rosters. But it’s a good problem to have!
Don’t forget about Jay Beagle in this overall picture. He would have to clear waivers (I believe) but he could still be destined for Hershey depending on the performances of Eakin and Sjogren.
I don’t see Perry getting a good chance at the NHL as he doesn’t fit the 3rd/4th line role like Beags, Eakin, and Sjogren. But either way there is going to be some interesting position battles in Washington that will translate into good things for Hershey.
