IceCaps Conquer Bears, 6-1 in First Ever Meeting

Yesterday, the Bears took to the skies and landed in Newfoundland. Tonight they faced the St. John’s IceCaps for the first time ever. It was sure to be a tough game with all the recent injuries to the Hershey squad that came just in time to play one of the top teams in the conference.

The IceCaps took the lead about halfway through the first period when Patrice Cormier scored on a breakaway. Braden Holtby couldn’t stop the puck from sneaking through. The Bears tied it up with a power play goal a few minutes later. Ryan Potulny had a great pass to Kyle Greentree, who scored on a backdoor play.

Here at Sweetest Hockey on Earth, we believe “once a Bear, always a Bear.” This belief is especially true with a fan favorite player like Steve Pinizzotto.

After winning two Calder Cup Championships with the Bears, Pinizzotto became a free agent last summer and signed with the Vancouver Canucks. He played in a handful of pre-season games before suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery. He was kind enough to use his free time to answer a few questions and let us know about his injury rehabilitation, Twitter, and keeping up with former teammates.

Norfolk Leaps Over Hershey with 2-1 Win

As we get closer to the end of the season, games against big teams like the Norfolk Admirals become even more important.

The Bears owned the first period. They out-shot the Admirals, stopped a Norfolk power play, and maintained the majority of puck possession. They did everything right except they couldn’t find the back of the net.

Bears Can’t Rally Back against Lake Erie Monsters

In the final game of this road stretch, the Bears had to take on the Lake Erie Monsters. After the excitement of their last meeting, it was easy to get excited for this game.

For the third game in a row, the Bears were the first team on the board. Julien Brouillette passed to Ryan Potulny, who one-timed the puck past Cedrick Desjardins. The Monsters weren’t too happy about this goal because Andrew Carroll fell into Desjardins during the play. But the goal counted and remained the only goal of the period.

In a match-up of the league’s most storied teams, the Bears were looking for a solid win on the road after experience some issues in this stretch.

Sadly, it didn’t turn out like they hoped. It started off just like we wanted it to. A gritty play resulted in Matt Pope chipping at puck at David Leggio. It took a nice bounce and hopped into the goal. But the Amerks scored on the power play and then during the final minute of the period to take the lead.

Sound Tigers defeat Bears in Penalty-Ridden Game

Just about halfway through their five-game road stretch, the Bears shipped off to face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In a pretty calm first period, neither team found the back of the net. Braden Holtby and Anders Nilsson weren’t called on to make too many saves for their respective teams but there were some good chances. It was a close game from the start.

Potulny’s Two Goals Lead Bears past the Monarchs

Fresh off of being on the wrong side of a shutout, the Bears seemed determined that tonight’s game against the Manchester Monarchs would not suffer the same fate.

Unfortunately, the Monarchs did take the lead just over a minute into the game. Justin Azevedo chipped a shot over Braden Holtby‘s glove hand on the first shot of the game.

Hershey Bears Take Down Syracuse Crunch, 2-1

It’s no secret that a big part of tonight’s game was Andrew Gordon facing off against his former team. But when the Hershey Bears play the Syracuse Crunch, you have to put friendships to the side.

Speaking of Andrew Gordon, he had a primary assist on the first goal of the game. Rick Schofield fired a one-timer that blazed past Braden Holtby to give the Crunch the lead. But Cody Eakin tied it up before the end of the period. He ended Hershey’s power play woes with a great shot against Antero Niitymaki.

Bears Lose Three-Goal Lead as Penguins Win, 4-3

It may have been the All-Star Break but the Bears were very busy over the past week. With some new guys adjusting to Hershey’s style of play and the league point leader on recall, it’s time for some of the guys to step up to the plate. No better time than against the rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

With minimal whistles, the first period flew by. There were no penalties and only a few icing calls; the first major break didn’t come until just about fifteen minutes in. Garrett Mitchell potted his third goal of the season after Patrick Wellar shot bounced off Andrew Carroll, who was in front of Brad Thiessen. Mitchell took the rebound and gave the Bears the first goal of the game.
