It has been three straight years the Bears have played on a banner raising (and dropping) night for the Calder Cup champions in the AHL, but this is the first in those three years that it has not been their own. With the return of Chris Bourque and Graham Mink, and the additions of Christian Hanson and Ryan Potulny, the Bears look to win a Cup this season, and they showed that them meant business as they beat the Senators, 3-2.

Bears Pre-Season Ends With Micfilkier’s OT Goal

There were two rare sights at Giant Center Monday night. First, a hockey game. Can you remember the last Monday hockey game in Chocolate Town? And a crowd that would have been sparce for even a Bears warm-up during the regular season. But it a was a Monday night, and it was a pre-season game. That being said, this game could be one of the best games, pre or regular season, we might see all year. A penalty shot, an Ovechkin-like goal, and an OT winner were part of this battle against the defending Calder Cup champs.

Who knew that calling the AHL All-Star game in Hershey last year along with Binghamton’s Grady Whittenburg would be a preview of things to come for Scott Stuccio? As it turns out, that perch high above the Giant Center ice now belongs to him. On September 1st, Scott was named the new voice of the Bears after John Walton’s “call-up” to the NHL and Washington Capitals. We here at Sweetest Hockey on Earth are lucky enough to bring you an interview with Scott through the magic of the internet.

Video: John Walton Shares His Thoughts on Being Named the New Voice of the Capitals

During the offseason, the Hershey Bears had a lot of turnover. Gone are fan-favorites like Andrew Gordon, Steve Pinizzotto, and Andrew Joudrey. Now, Bears fans must say goodbye to long-time radio play-by-play man John Walton.

Early Tuesday, the veteran AHL broadcaster was named the new voice of the Washington Capitals, replacing Steve Kolbe who called his 1,000th career regular season game for the team on November 11, 2010. Walton will be the Caps Director of Broadcasting, with additional responsibilities for the radio network and Caps social media.

Are Sheldon Souray’s Days in Hershey Numbered?

All good things have to come to an end, right? Despite accumulating only three goals and eight assists in 22 games with the Bears, interest in banished Oilers’ defenseman Sheldon Souray has rapidly picked up over the weekend. First, there was a blog post on ESPN, where Pierre LeBrun suggested that the Rangers were interested in a veteran presence on their blue line:

Rangers interested in defensemen: The Rangers’ power play has consistently struggled (23rd), so a veteran point man such as Kaberle, Bryan McCabe or Sheldon Souray would likely interest the Blueshirts. Each would also provide a veteran presence on a really young Rangers blue line.

Then tonight, TSN took that one step further:

The Hershey Bears 2009-10 Championship Rings

After four months of waiting, the returning players of the 2009-10 season finally got to put a ring on it Saturday Night at Giant Center and receive their Championship rings. And much like everything else the Bears organization does, they handled the ring ceremony with style, class, and creativity.

Since last year’s Bears club became the first Hershey team to win a Calder Cup on home ice in 30 years, the organization invited members of the 1979-80 class back to Giant Center to hand out the rings.

“The ceremony was real nice,” said right winger Andrew Gordon. “The rings are really well done. They’re big this year, too. I really want to put it side by side with my [2008-09 ring] and see how it stacks up.”

Mathieu Perreault gets his ring from Bears great Lou Franceschetti

Mathieu Perreault, one of the Capitals final cuts during training camp, got to receive his ring from one of the most popular Hershey Bears of all-time, Lou Franceschetti. Franceschetti played parts of 5 seasons in with the Bears scoring 314 points in 374 games and went on to have a solid NHL career playing 459 games with the Capitals, Sabres, and Maple Leafs.

When asked about the ring post-game, Perreault got a big smile on his face. “It’s unbelievable,” exclaimed Perry. “Last year’s was unbelievable and this year’s was even better. The ring is so beautiful. It’s so special. It’s unreal!”

So what’s the fuss all about?
