Paul Carey Becomes First Bear to Score Four Goals in a Game in Seven Years

During a game in February 2010, Mathieu Perreault would score four goals against Bridgeport in a 9-2 clobbering of the Sound Tigers. That was the last time a Bears player scored four goals in a game. Over 2,500 days later, that “days since last four-goal game” poster got reset.

Paul Carey has been super hot as of late. But coming into Saturday night’s game, not may people would have predicted the performance he would put on. Midway through the first period, Carey would score his 20th and Hershey’s first goal of the game. Almost 20 minutes later, Carey would put home his second goal of the night. Then with nine minutes left in the third, Carey would complete the hat trick to put Hershey up for good.

23 minutes into his first game of the season, Dustin Gazley was attacking Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s net. Madison Bowey Poised for Return to Hershey Lineup

It’s a week Madison Bowey would like to forget. After spending Christmas back home with his family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the 21-year-old defenseman had issues getting back to Central Pennsylvania with flight issues preventing his return in time for a game against Lehigh Valley on December 26. “Definitely not the way I wanted to start my second half,” said Bowey after Bears practice Wednesday. “I was geared up and ready to go for the Syracuse game, but getting injured there on my third shift was pretty tough.”

Despite wearing kevlar socks and a bunga pad, Syracuse Crunch defenseman Luke Witkowski’s skate sliced the front tendon on Bowey’s left leg in a freak accident. While an injury like that could cause a player to focus more on skate blades, it’s not something Bowey is too worried about. “When I’m playing I’m not thinking about it. I know watching games – past games and games on TV – you notice more skates now and how close they can get to flesh and could cause an injury. But if you’re playing, you can’t really think about it.”

Three hours after the Bears got off the ice at Giant Center in their first practice after winter storm Stella dropped just over a foot of snow on Chocolate Town, the hopped back on with a very special group of kids. The American Special Hockey Association’s York Polar Bears and Hershey Heros teams joined some of the Hershey players for a skate Wednesday afternoon.

After Missing Three Months, Riley Barber is Poised to Make Return to the Lineup

Riley Barber’s last major injury was in March 2015. An MCL tear sidelined the winger for the end of his college career. While he had the entire offseason to recover with that injury, his most recent injury, one to his right hand, has placed him out of the line-up mid-season for the first time. “It’s way different,” said Barber. “You’re around the team, but you’re not really a part of it. It’s been hard, but I’m excited to get back.”

Sense of Urgency Surrounds Hershey Bears Heading into Second Half of Season

Thursday morning the Bears were back on the ice at Giant Center after a four-day break for the All-Star Challenge in Allentown. While Chris Bourque and Travis Boyd represented the Bears, the rest of the team received a much-needed rest as they prepare for the final half of the season.

“With 32 games left, we’re certainly in a good battle,” head coach Troy Mann said. “There’s so much inter-divisional play that you can’t rule out getting as high as second. We have to play real good hockey and build off of last weekend.”
