Vitek Vanecek Earns First AHL Win in Last Game of Season

A 6:15 am flight greeted Vitek Vanecek this morning after he was told he would be playing for the Hershey Bears Sunday night in the Chocolate and White’s season finally. Vanecek’s South Carolina Stingrays played last night against the Kalamazoo Wings in the first round of the ECHL playoffs, taking a 2-0 lead in their series.

Through translator Jakub Vrana, the 20-year-old netminder said he got very little sleep before heading to Chocolate Town in the morning. “[I] was very excited to get here,” Vanecek said.

“It’s nice to see him comfortable out there,” fellow countryman Vrana said. “He had a great game today. I’m very happy for him.”

Sunday night the Hershey Bears honored this season’s team with the annual award ceremony. Eight awards were handed out to players this year.

Chris Bourque took home Bears team MVP, Riley Barber was named Rookie of the Year, Travis Boyd won the Kenny Smith Memorial Award for most player of the game nominations, Madison Bowey took home two awards: John Travers / Steve Summers award for highest plus/minus and Defenseman of the Year, and Nathan Walker took home eight awards: Man of the Year, Unsung Hero, and Most Improved Player.

Harrisburg’s Twin Ponds Finalist for Kraft Hockeyville 2016

During the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers game Saturday afternoon, the 2016 Kraft Hockeyville finalist were announced. One of those finalists for the $150,000 prize is Twin Ponds Family Complex – East location. The facility was nominated by Central Dauphin High School student, Samantha Weaver.

“I remember watching the Winter Classic this past New Year, and I saw a commercial on Kraft Hockeyville,” Weaver told Chocolate Hockey. “After learning how to skate and play hockey and meeting tons of wonderful people at Twin Ponds over these past few years, I really wanted to do something for them.

“The people involved there are such great people who try their best to make your time there very satisfying. They really deserve this opportunity to upgrade the rink, and be more known for the great things they do there.”

Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler Exercises Option to Return to Switzerland

The Hershey Bears and Washington Capitals have announced defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler has exercised his option to return to Switzerland.

The Switzerland native played six games for Hershey, scoring his first AHL point in his first AHL game against Lehigh Valley in Hershey’s 8-0 win on March 23.

Siegenthaler, 18, was drafted by Washington in 2015, 57th overall in the second round. Bears PR director Scott Stuccio said Siegenthaler is expected to return in July for Capitals developmental camp.
