Another weekend, another road game to kick it off. Tonight was the fourth meeting between the Hershey Bears and the Norfolk Admirals. It was also Norfolk’s annual “Toy Toss.”

The Bears earned the first goal of the game. After killing off a penalty, the Bears got a turn with the man advantage and had a 3-on-1 play. Matt Ford tapped his own rebound past Dustin Tokarski to get the early lead.

Bears Winning Streak Comes to End against Penguins

We close another chapter in the book of the rivalry. All photos by Kyle Mace.

Tonight was the sixth installment in the Hershey Bears/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins story. The Bears had a chance to even the series up after going 2-3 before tonight.

The first period saw no goals, only some good chances. But as is typical with all Bears/Penguins games, there was plenty of the rough stuff going around. Patrick McNeill was the victim of a knee-on-knee hit from Nick Petersen. McNeill didn’t finish the first period but thankfully did return for the second.

I begin today by remembering those that died as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor on this date 70 years ago.I am thankful for you and all the other veterans of this country every day.

There was a lot that happened with SHoE over the past week. The Bears won all three games last weekend to vault them into first place in the division. Check out the wrap-ups here, here and here. On of the games was broadcast by ABC 27 and we had behind the scenes coverage. And of course we can’t forget that the home game on Saturday was Teddy Bear Toss night. Did you see the pictures? In the midst of all that, the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society hosted a dinner called “A Night at the Old Barn”. We were there to cover it and we also had an interview with Mike “Doc” Emrick where Emrick talks about the Old Barn, the Bears and his thoughts on the Caps/Bruce Boudreau. Whew! And that was just our coverage of the week. Now on to the others…

The Bears had a fantastic start to this weekend but the final game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers still loomed over them.

The Bears enjoyed their own Teddy Bear Toss last night and tonight it was Bridgeport’s turn. The stuffed animals were unleashed late in the first period when Trevor Frischmon’s wristshot got past Braden Holtby.

Photos: Hershey’s 2011 Teddy Bear Toss Night

Hershey Bears and Teddy Bears! All photos by Kyle Mace.

Everybody loves Teddy Bear Toss Night! Well, maybe not the Portland Pirates. After scoring only one goal, the Bears trounced the Pirates with seven unanswered goals. The first goal of the night went to Graham Mink, who started the comeback and triggered the shower of stuffed animals from over 10,000 fans watching at Giant Center. After cleaning up and counting all the Bears, a new record of 10,090 stuffed animals will be donated to the Hershey Medical Center. After the jump, see Kyle’s photos that document the occasion.

Bears’ Effort Rewarded with 4-1 Win against Crunch

Bodies flew as the Bears beat the Crunch. Photo by Jim Commentucci / The Post-Standard.

The Bears have had a tough time against the Syracuse Crunch so far this season. They seemed determined that tonight would not see the same fate.

It’s a strange concept to have Graham Mink on the third line but it paid off. Mink was able to muscle the puck away from the Crunch and pass to Matt Pope, who snapped it past Iiro Tarkki. That beautiful goal was Pope’s first as a Hershey Bear.

Later in the period, the Crunch managed to tie it up on the power play. Braden Holtby was screened by Patrick Maroon and possibly his own teammate. Maroon tipped the shot. But the Bears wouldn’t let that get them down! Moments afterwards, Chris Bourque had a breakaway. He was stopped by Tarkki but the Bears maintained possession and Tomas Kundratek scored his first goal as a Bear!

In an unusual Tuesday night game, the Bears traveled up North to face off against the Connecticut Whale. For Francois Bouchard and Tomas Kundratek, it was the first time they would play their former team.

The Bears had a 5-on-3 power play during the first period. The Whale killed off one penalty but Chris Bourque scored shortly afterwards. It was widely advertised that this game would pit the Bourque Brothers against each other with their family in attendance. As Graham Mink called it, it was Bourque Bowl 2011.

Unfortunately, the Whale didn’t take long to tie it up. A 2-on-1 play broke out and Mats Zuccarello beat Braden Holtby. Tie game after twenty minutes.
