Tom Poti Returns for First Game in Two Years

January 12, 2011. That was the last time Tom Poti was on the ice playing in a hockey game. Poti has had a loitering groin problems and at one point, a fractured pelvis. “It was awesome,” Poti said after Hershey’s 5-0 win against the Connecticut Whale. “It’s good to have some fun again and play some hockey.”

Saturday night the Hershey Bears returned home to face the Connecticut Whale at Giant Center. As if the Bears’ offensive hasn’t been challenged enough as of late, they would have to battle the Whale with no Jeff Taffe, Ryan Potulny and Evan Barlow in the lineup. Philipp Grubauer earned his second start of the season in Hershey and gained his first ever shootout win in a 4-3 victory over the Whale.

Penguins Withhold Bears’ Offense in 1-0 Setback

Friday night, the Hershey Bears and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins met for the final time before the 2013 Outdoor Classic. The Penguins faced the challenge of beating the Bears for only the second time this season. Brian Dumoulin scored the contest’s only goal and helped the Penguins blank Hershey, 1-0. The loss snapped a seven game road winning streak for Hershey.

With the Giant Center ice troubling the Hershey Bears Hockey Club, they looked for their tenth road win of the campaign in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Braden Holtby was named a healthy scratch, as Dany Sabourin backstopped the Bears to an exciting 4-3 overtime win over the Sound Tigers. Tomas Kundratek tallied two goals, including the overtime game winner to help tame the Tigers.

The Senators enter their second contest of 2013 at Hershey with a 20-7-1-2 record, second in the East Division. Mike Hoffman scored the game-winner at the 12:08 mark, as the Bears only fired 21 shots on goal in a 3-1 loss to Binghamton.

Braden Holtby Named AHL Goaltender of the Month

Earlier today, the AHL and the Hershey Bears announced that goalie Braden Holtby has been named CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for December. The 23-year-old netminder appeared in ten games last month, putting up a 1.69 goals-against average, a .943 save percentage, and three shutouts.

On December 29, 1973, the Hershey Bears set a franchise record with 63 shots in a single game en route to an 11-2 win. Thirty nine years later, it was quite the opposite story when the Bears took on the Albany Devils at Giant Center. Rather than an 11-2 blowout, Albany battled their way to a 3-2 win in Hershey.
