Former Bears Captain Steve Oleksy Makes Return to Giant Center

One year ago, Steve Oleksy scored a goal for the Hershey Bears, setting off the flight of thousands of teddy bears onto the ice at Giant Center. A year later, the 29-year-old blueliner found himself on the other side of the goal.

“Being part of [the teddy bear toss] before you kind of expect it,” Oleksy said after the game. “That shows the support Hershey gives to the Bears here. It’s a little different being on the other bench as the teddy bears rain.”

We hate to bring up bad memories, especially since the correct mentality in hockey is to continuously move forward. However it’s worth it to briefly reflect back on how our playoff hopes and dreams, as well as the Mike Haviland era ended a year ago. Back-to-back road games in Norfolk, in mid-April; Both must win games, and both dropped by the Bears in regulation.

Now currently, we’re thankfully nowhere near as dire and concerning of a situation. Even after dropping a 5-3 decision to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the first of two meetings this week.

It was a meeting of the rivals in Hershey for one last time this regular season. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins made their last stop in Chocolate Town, USA for the 2014-15 season. The Bears, who came into the game going 10-1-0-1 in 2015 was looking to expand their lead for first place in the East Division. With a packed Giant Center, this game did not disappoint.

After Philipp Grubauer was injured in the Bears last game on New Year’s Eve, back-up goalie Pheonix Copley was set up to start against the Penguins where he hoped to get his second win against Hershey’s archrival. Sitting six points back behind the Baby Pens, the Bears hoped to get a quality start out of the young goalie and gain some ground on the first place team.

As the turkey heats up in the oven for Thanksgiving tomorrow, the Hershey Bears – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rivalry is heating up with each meeting this season. Coming into this evening’s game, the Bears have won seven straight against the Penguins at Giant Center. Hershey was looking to make that eight straight with the traditional Thanksgiving eve game.

After a tough loss Friday night in Syracuse, the Hershey Bears looked to bounce back against archrival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Baby Pens came out with an early 2-0 lead with two goals from Jayson Megna. Hershey would not go down without a fight though, scoring three unanswered from Philippe Cornet, Connor Carrick, and a penalty shot from Chandler Stephenson to give Hershey the 3-0 win over WBS.

The Bears kicked off their home season Saturday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Hershey topped the baby Penguins of a score 4-1 with goals coming from Tim Kennedy, Dane Byers, Casey Wellman, and a penalty shot goal from Dustin Gazley. Hershey will take on Lehigh Valley Saturday night against the Phantoms.
