Chocolate Fix 2/8/2012

Jersey to be worn by the Bears this weekend for “Chocolate Covered February”

It was another eventful week here in Chocolatetown. Last Thursday we saw a trade that bid farewell to Danny Richmond (and the Richmond Factor) as well as Matt Ford. In turn, we welcomed Mike Carmen and Kevin Marshall. We also saw the AHL points leader, Keith Aucoin, get a call to Washington on the same day. The following day saw  Carmen and Marshall suit to to play in Wilkes-Barre. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a favorable result. The struggle for Hershey continued on Saturday, but Sunday the sun was shinning as the boys finally broke the baby Pens winning streak in Giant Center.

It was a so-so week in the land of the chocolate and white. The Bears traveled to Norfolk for two games before the All-Star Classic. Friday saw a continuation of their losing ways, however they made their way back into the win column on Saturday. Boyd Kane, Keith Aucoin and Chris Bourque then made their way to Atlantic City to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic. You can see highlights from the skills competition here. Unfortunately, they were all held off the scoring sheet in the game. The beginning of the week brought recall news. Cody Eakin was called up to Washington as well Joel Rechlicz.

More on the Rechlicz call up after the break…

From the Bears:

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed forward Joel Rechlicz to an entry-level contract and recalled him and forward Cody Eakin from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

You can read the full press release here. I’m sure no one is surprised by the recall of Cody Eakin, but Joel Rechlicz was a little of a surprise to this blogger. I’m sure it is leaving many in Washington wondering who he is. Assuming that you read the official press releases from Hershey and/or Washington, you can look up all we have to offer by clicking here. I can sum it up for you. He’s a great guy off the ice. On the ice, he is a tremendous worker. I’m sure you have drawn your own conclusion, but yes he will drop the gloves in a heartbeat.

As I started writing, “Joel Rechlicz” was trending #5 in Washington on Twitter. Go get ’em, Joel!!

I’d rather not talk about this past weekend, but there were 3 games. Here are recaps from Friday, Saturday and Sunday all resulting in no points. The only good things to come out of this past week was an announcement that the All-Star Classic would be on TV and the Bears continued their tradition of reading in schools.

This isn’t the kind of season Zach Miskovic hoped he would have, but he is still making the best of it. [PennLive]

The Bears celebrate another win. Photo by Kyle Mace.

Another week has gone by and a lot going on here at SHoE. The Bears went to Charlotte and came back with 2 wins via a 12 round shootout and comeback win. We are also making a push to get a Shorty Award. As of this writing, we are tied for 6th place with the Vancouver Canucks. Since you are reading this I’ll assume that you like us, so go vote! On Saturday, the Bears went to Binghamton and it took another amazing comeback to get a win. Finally we gathered your pictures from the Outdoor Classic and posted them for all to see.

Well it’s another Wednesday and that means it is Chocolate Fix time. What is there to talk about this week? Hmmmmmm… I’m sure there must be something. Well I guess you can go back and read about that little game that happened on Friday night. You know, the one where we smashed the AHL attendance record playing outside at Citizen’s Bank Park. There’s also the game on Saturday that was a rematch of the Friday night game. Lastly there was the last home game in a couple weeks on Sunday.

Reflections on the Outdoor Classic

Before we left for the game I wrote about how last year was too warm and this year was supposed to be different. Well that was the forecast. As we were getting ready to leave, the temperature was around 60F. I was hoping that when the sun went down the temps would drop. We had set out lots of things to keep warm including a wool blanket to take with us. As we were packing the truck, we decided not to take the blanket. I did have my daughter put on her long underwear because I knew it would get chilly. She’s eleven after all and would probably get cold. That’s what I thought at least. Once we got to the stadium parking lot it was time to put on the rest of the clothes. For me that meant my jersey, a sweatshirt and a coat. For my daughter, that was snow pants, boots, a sweatshirt, a jersey and her coat. As it turns out she couldn’t get her jersey on over her sweatshirt. It was like a scene out of “A Christmas Story” as my girlfriend tried to help her. She kidded my daughter about the scene from the movie about not being able to put her arms down.

Here we go! First Chocolate Fix of the new year! This is a big week for the Bears. Friday they will play in the AHL Outdoor Classic at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia. I know I’m getting excited for this one and I’m pretty sure you are too. The Bears had mixed results in the last week of the year. They had a tough loss to the Penguins, but then had a nice win to finish the calendar year against the Admirals. Special jerseys were worn for New Year’s Eve and the Bears will wear special ones for the game Friday night, too. You can see them both here. Lastly, we put together a list of our top 11 moments from 2011.
