The Richmond Factor

Danny Richmond (Photo by Kyle Mace)

After the meltdown formerly known as the Sunday game against Norfolk, my girlfriend (in a semi-kidding sort of way) said “We would have won if they’d have played Danny Richmond.” She kind of has a thing for him and has declared him to be her favorite. Don’t get me wrong. She’s no puck bunny. She has been studying the game in depth and is a big help when I am tweeting a game. She’s a true hockey lover. As we were on our way home, I started thinking about it more. Could there be something to this? Richmond has seen limited action this year. Including this past weekend, he has seen action in just 12 games. The limited playing time is at least in part due to the AHL’s “veteran rule”.

The rule as described by the AHL:

Another full week here at SHoE. The Bears finished out their third week of three games in three nights. As Meatloaf would say “Two out of three ain’t bad.” But then again it isn’t great either when you look at the defensive implosion in Sunday’s game against the Norfolk Admirals. They had just beaten the same team on Friday night. Saturday they added another convincing win against Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In other happenings this week around SHoE:

Later today look for a new post on what I am calling “The Richmond Factor”.

Now on to the rest…

Bears extend winning streak to 4 with a 5-3 win over the Whale

Photo from Scott Stuccio’s twitter feed.

Tonight’s game actually got off to a little bit of an early start with puck drop at 6:59. The Bears came out strong, but ended up surrendering 3 penalties in the period. Fortunately the penalty kill units were stong as usual. On the one power play that the Bears had they were able to maintain good possession in the offensive zone. Graham Mink and Jacob Micflikier did a good job getting in the way of the Whale goaltender. There were some quality chances in front of the net. In the end, the Bears had more shots on goal an looked like the better team for the period.

I begin today by remembering those that died as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor on this date 70 years ago.I am thankful for you and all the other veterans of this country every day.

There was a lot that happened with SHoE over the past week. The Bears won all three games last weekend to vault them into first place in the division. Check out the wrap-ups here, here and here. On of the games was broadcast by ABC 27 and we had behind the scenes coverage. And of course we can’t forget that the home game on Saturday was Teddy Bear Toss night. Did you see the pictures? In the midst of all that, the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society hosted a dinner called “A Night at the Old Barn”. We were there to cover it and we also had an interview with Mike “Doc” Emrick where Emrick talks about the Old Barn, the Bears and his thoughts on the Caps/Bruce Boudreau. Whew! And that was just our coverage of the week. Now on to the others…

Video: Mike “Doc” Emrick talks about the Old Barn, the Bears and the Caps.

Before the Hershey – Derry Township Historical Society’s dinner “A Night at the Old Barn” I had the chance to sit down with broadcasting legend Mike “Doc” Emrick in a one-on-one interview. Doc was asked to be the keynote speaker for the dinner and very humbly accepted. Earlier in his broadcasting career, Doc worked for the AHL’s Maine Mariners and had broadcast games at the Hersheypark Arena. Later he was hired as the play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia Flyers. During his time with the Flyers (and later with the New Jersey Devils) Doc and his wife were residents of Hershey. It was during that time that he used to attend games in the Old Barn as his time would allow.
