Hershey Drops Back-to-Back Games Against Worcester, Manchester

There are 11 games remaining in the regular season for the Hershey Bears, who are now five points out of the 8th and final playoff spot. That’s not an impossible obstacle to overcome, but the Bears current slump is making the road to the playoffs even harder. Hershey dropped two of three this weekend with back-to-back losses in Worcester on Saturday and in Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

Everything seemed to be going so well. The Hershey Bears had won 12 straight at home and 5 straight overall. They were vaulting toward first place. And now in a five game span, the Bears have hit their worst slump of the season. The latest loss was a 4-1 defeat Saturday night at the hands of a team that’s also been struggling, the Charlotte Checkers.

Bears Unable to Hold off Americans, Lose 4-1

It wasn’t the homecoming Bears goalie David Leggio was hoping for. Playing in his first game in Rochester with Hershey, since leaving the Amerks after two solid seasons, Leggio gave up four goals in a 4-1 Rochester win over Hershey. Leggio made 29 saves, but Hershey only managed one goal and 26 shots in a losing effort.

Hershey Splits Series with Adirondack

Perhaps the Hershey Bears are trying to make a statement to the schedule makers. Three games in 31 hours is very unusual in any league. But when the Bears played Adirondack in Philadelphia, they were going for their seventh straight victory and second in an 18 hour span. In the first game with the Phantoms, the Bears came up with a 5-3 victory Friday night in Glens Falls, beating the Phantoms to keep their winning streak alive.

Hershey Stays Hot in Syracuse, Win 4-1

The Hershey Bears will try and keep their “night of firsts” momentum going tonight, when they face the Syracuse Crunch for a second straight game. The Bears won for the first time on a Friday in the last five Friday games.

Philipp Grubauer got his first start for Hershey, after 16 games with the NHL Washington Capitals. Grubauer recorded 29 saves in Hershey’s 4-1 win over Syracuse. Steve Oleksy also returned to Hershey’s lineup for the first time since March, when he was called up by the Caps.

It may not show in the standings just yet, but at the halfway point of the AHL season, the Hershey Bears have developed some valuable momentum. Saturday night at Giant Center, the Bears pulled out a 5-3 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The victory gave the Bears their fifth win in the last seven games.
