Zach Sanford Scores First AHL Goal

Zach Sanford spent 19 games in the NHL with the Capitals to start the season but was still missing that first professional goal. He finally got it Sunday night with the Hershey Bears. On a feed from behind the goal line, Nathan Walker sent the puck to the tape of Sanford’s stick, who was able to put the puck past Kristers Gudlevskis of the Syracuse Crunch, giving him that first pro goal.

“It was a good feeling,” Sanford said after the game. “Walker had been working hard all night. One finally popped out to me and I was finally able to put it in the back of the net.”

Hershey Bears Fans do Mannequin Challenge During Game Saturday Night

During a stoppage in play Saturday night, a group of fans on the suite level caught my eye. It looked like they were all frozen. What they actually were doing was the hottest new internet trend, the Mannequin Challenge, something the Bears did earlier in the week.

The Hershey Bears lost to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-3 in a shootout Saturday night. Jakub Vrana, Riley Barber, and Chandler Stephenson found the back of the net for the Bears, but it wouldn’t be enough as Bridgeport would only need one shootout goal to take the extra point.

“Hockey’s Lost Boy” Comes to Central PA

This Sunday at the Allen Theater in Annville, a movie featuring a former Hershey Bear will be shown. “Hockey’s Lost Boy: The Rise and Fall of George Patterson” is the story about the man who scored the first ever goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Patterson would later play for Hershey, helping the team to a Calder Cup Finals appearance. But scandal would end up derailing George’s hockey career.

The Hershey Bears are one of the hottest team in the AHL right now, and nothing is stopping them. On Sunday night, they extended their winning streak to five games. With goals from Christian Thomas, Riley Barber, Nathan Walker, Garrett Mitchell, and Aaron Ness, along with a 21-save preformance from Joe Cannata, Hershey took all six possible points avaiable this weekend.

Former Hershey Bear Marek Svatos Dead at 34

Former Hershey Bears player Marek Svatos has died according to the IIHF. The Slovakia native was only 34 years old.

Svatos spent two seasons in Hershey, playing for Mike Foligno in 2002-03 and Paul Fixter in 2004-05. He started his professional career with the Bears in 2002, scoring 13 points in 30 games that season.
