Early Friday, EA Sports showed their “AHL Sim of the Week,” featuring Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the simulation. The simulation showed the Bears coming out on top with a 2-1 victory. The Chocolate and White must have heard because they would take the non-virtual two points with a 3-1 win over the Baby Pens.

Friday the Hershey Bears looked to leap over the Springfield Falcons on the road for their fourth win of the year. Entering against the 5-1-0-1 Falcons, Braden Holtby received the nod to start in goal. It was Holtby’s first start since his 35-save shutout over Albany, six days prior. In front of a Springfield crowd of 3,489 fans, Boyd Kane and Matt Pope found the score sheet and Stan Galiev had the game-winning goal in the shootout as the Bears topped the Falcons, 3-2 (SO).

Bears Fall Short in Season Opener

If the Hershey Bears were to pick a location to open their season on the road, it likely would have been Syracuse. The last five seasons the Onondaga County War Memorial has been a very  successful road rink for the Bears. Entering Saturday’s match-up, the Bears have posted a 8-1-0-1 record in Syracuse dating back to the 2007-08 season. But the winning pattern didn’t hold up Saturday night as former Norfolk Admiral, Cory Conacher posted two points and earned first star honors in a 4-3 Crunch with over Hershey. It was the first opening night loss for Hershey dating back to October 2007.

The Bears didn’t close out the last of their home games on an up beat, but in a couple weeks it will be a brand new season… playoff season. It started with a loss on Friday night versus the baby Pens on their home ice. Saturday night at home ended with another loss. They were able to salvage one point in a shootout. Sunday night was Team Awards Night. That was really the only bright spot of the weekend as Sunday ended with yet another loss. The playoffs are right around the corner and this is not the time to go on a losing streak. The Bears need healthy players now, or this may be a short post season.

Bears Continue to Struggle, Lose to Whale 1-0

The outcome of Mark French’s frustration (All photos by Kyle Mace)

Dany Sabourin has been living by the motto “No Rest” these past couple of weeks. Out of the last 13 Bears game Sabourin has started 12 of them. The one he didn’t start, he was backing up Braden Holtby in Washington. After all of the games and travel for Mr. Sabourin, he might need some rest after tonight’s game. It wasn’t a busy game, but one that felt like it was going to go on forever. Connecticut only had 26 shots on the night, but one got through. The one that got through would be the only puck that saw the back of the net as Hershey would lose, 1-0.

The Hershey Bears are supposed to feed players to the parent club Washington Capitals, but on Saturday night it was the Bears fans who got to taste the “Cheese” again. Former Bears goaltender Daren Machesney returned to Hershey from South Carolina, playing his first game as a Bear since the 08-9 season. Dany Sabourin was called up to Washington, to back up the other Bears goaltender Braden Holtby, as the Caps finished the regular season against the Rangers. Machesney played well, but the Bears only picked up one point against Syracuse in a 3-2 shootout loss.

When the Bears played the St. John’s IceCaps for the first time, they left with only one point out of four. Tonight they got a chance to earn some more in front of the Hershey faithful.

The Bears are known for their strong starts and they did not disappoint tonight. Mike Carman scored first off of a Garrett Mitchell feed from behind the goal. With a few minutes left in the first period, Boyd Kane scored a shorthanded breakaway goal to give the Bears a two goal lead at the break.
