Just Another Hockey Player | By Nathan Walker

In the newest player blog, Nathan Walker provides a look at his journey to Hershey, and what he’s doing to achieve his ultimate dream of making the NHL.

The journey I’ve taken to Hershey has definitely been a journey you could say. I went to the Czech Republic when I was 13-years-old and played there for five and a half years. I’d say that’s where I developed most of my game. Then finished the final half of that last year in the USHL, playing 30 games for the Youngstown Phantoms.

From there, I went to Capitals Rookie Camp and was fortunate enough to have a chance to play in a couple of exhibition games. They seemed to like me enough to want to send me to Hershey for the year and then the year after they decided to draft me. It wasn’t the regular play juniors, play college, then turn pro route most guys take. It was a long journey, but it was definitely worth it.

Sunday night, the Bears were handed only their second regulation loss in 2016 by the Providence Bruins. In attendance for the game was Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz. And as Trotz currently leads the Capitals to one of the best records in hockey history, his thoughts on the current Bears squad are very high.

“Obviously, I’m not going to judge the Bears on one game,” Trotz said after the game. “Just look at their body of work. I think they’ve been pretty consistent with both goaltenders, the defense has developed; they’ve got good leadership with [Mike] Moore and [Ryan] Stanton on the back.

Riley Barber and Nathan Walker found themselves on opposite ends of the ice at the end of Bears practice Thursday morning. Walker, sporting a pink helmet, was taking one-timers with teammates, smiling as he sat on his stick and goofing off with them. On the other end, Barber was smiling as he playfully pushed his roommate Paul Carey in front of the net.

The two players are now sharing a line in Hershey with former NHL star Scott Gomez, but they have a bit more in common than their linemate and team they play on.

The Washington Capitals announced Wednesday they have agreed to terms with centerman Mike Richards. Richards, 30, has had legal issues over the past year, but has now landed himself a job with the Capitals organization.

There could be many reasons that the Capitals made this signing, but one in particular sticks out: the lack of depth at center. The position has very little depth in Hershey currently as Chandler Stephenson is currently out and Zach Sill is on recall to Washington.

The Bears were working with two true centers since Saturday when it was announced Stephenson had an upperbody injury. Now with the signing of Richards, Hershey could regain Sill, or even the former Philadelphia Phantom in Richards.

Earlier this week, we had three Hershey Bears players carve pumpkins to see how they would do. Madison Bowey, Travis Boyd, and Nathan Walker were our subjects, carving everything from the Bears logo to a scary face. Walker, who’s from Australia, said caving pumpkins is not a normal tradition down under. For a first timer, Walker did pretty well. You can see all the carved squashes below with the whole event being recorded on video.
