Bears defenseman Bobby Shea was suspended one game by the AHL Monday. Shea received the suspension for his actions during Thursday’s game against Albany. Shea threw a late punch, knocking down Ben Thomson at the end of their fight in the third period. Shea was ejected from the game as the fight was the second of the night.

Capitals Make Six Cuts From Training Camp. Galiev, Grubauer Make Opening Night Roster

The Washington Capitals made six cuts from their training camp roster Monday morning, setting up their final roster of 24 players. Included on that opening night roster are seven players who played with Hershey last season. Stan Galiev, Philipp Grubauer, Chris Brown, Nate Schmidt, Andre Burakovsky and Dmitry Orlov. Burakovsky and Orlov played only small stints with Hershey last year. Both Galiev and Grubauer make the opening night roster for the first time in their careers.

The Hershey Bears saw a familiar face at morning skate Saturday as Connor Carrick returned from Washington. At the end of the skate around, the coaching staff took on Carrick, Mike Moore and Chris Bourque in a 3 vs. 3, first to five contest, which the players won 5-2.

Eight months ago, Nathan Walker’s season ended early after an ACL tear in the ECHL. After months of rehab, the Australian forward returned to Giant Center, scoring in the Bears preseason loss to Albany. “I thought Walker had a strong game,” said Bears head coach Troy Mann. “He was good on the penalty kill. He’s that type of kid that’s really got to get his confidence back.”

At the end of the second day of Hershey Bears training camp, Jakub Vrana got into a stretching position and scooted forward to the center ice dot to lead the team in stretches. He got up, took a few shots into a net, then was called over by Bears PR Director, Scott Stuccio. “What, me for an interview? Are you sure, Stucc?” Vrana said with a laugh and smile. “Just getting to know the kid in whole,” Bears head coach Troy Mann said, “I think he’s fun-loving kid. He’s always got a smile on his face, got a great personality.”

Former Hershey Bear Chad Wiseman Named NWHL’s New York Riveters Head Coach

Former Hershey Bears forward Chad Wiseman was named the first head coach of the New York Riveters of the National Women’s Hockey League on Tuesday. Wiseman played for Hershey in the 2006-07 season, posting 35 points in 48 regular season games. He also played in 16 playoff games during Hershey’s run to the Calder Cup Finals that season.

Former Bears heavyweight Joel Rechlicz is back in town for a summer youth hockey camp in Harrisburg. The Edge Performance Summer Camp is taking place at Twins Ponds East where over sixty young skaters are taking part in a week long session lead by Rechlicz and former Bears Calder Cup champion Rob Shearer.
