Washington Capitals “Black Aces”

With the Hershey Bears season coming to a close, most Bears fans will be putting all of their focus on the NHL playoffs. One of those teams left in the NHL playoffs are the Washington Capitals, the Bears affiliate. Monday night the Capitals will face off against the New York Rangers in game two of their series, but you could see some recalls before that. Those recalls are called “Black Aces,” named after holding the “Dead Man’s Hand” (two black aces) in a game of poker. So who could some of those “Black Aces” be?

Bears Drop Second Game of Playoffs, 7-2

Mark French argues with the officials. All photos by Kyle Mace.

Down one game, the Bears had a chance to tie up the series before returning home.

…unfortunately it didn’t go quite as planned. I won’t upset you with the details, but the Bears left the first period down four goals. Between deflections, rebounds, and just plain getting out-worked, the Penguins owned Dany Sabourin and the first period and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Penguins Top Bears, 3-1 in First Game of Playoffs

The quest for the 12th Calder Cup began tonight. Even though the Bears are viewed as the underdogs in the series, we know that they’re not going down without a fight (literally and figuratively).

It wasn’t a strong start for the Bears. After twenty minutes, they only had three shots on goal and were down one goal. It could’ve been worse, however. Dany Sabourin was back and doing his best to keep his team in it. The Penguin goal came from Colin McDonald just ten seconds into their first power play of the night.

Chocolate Fix 4/11/2012

How about a nice picture of Coco since I didn’t have many other bright spots to feature. Photo by Kyle Mace.

The Bears didn’t close out the last of their home games on an up beat, but in a couple weeks it will be a brand new season… playoff season. It started with a loss on Friday night versus the baby Pens on their home ice. Saturday night at home ended with another loss. They were able to salvage one point in a shootout. Sunday night was Team Awards Night. That was really the only bright spot of the weekend as Sunday ended with yet another loss. The playoffs are right around the corner and this is not the time to go on a losing streak. The Bears need healthy players now, or this may be a short post season.

Bears Continue to Struggle, Lose to Whale 1-0

The outcome of Mark French’s frustration (All photos by Kyle Mace)

Dany Sabourin has been living by the motto “No Rest” these past couple of weeks. Out of the last 13 Bears game Sabourin has started 12 of them. The one he didn’t start, he was backing up Braden Holtby in Washington. After all of the games and travel for Mr. Sabourin, he might need some rest after tonight’s game. It wasn’t a busy game, but one that felt like it was going to go on forever. Connecticut only had 26 shots on the night, but one got through. The one that got through would be the only puck that saw the back of the net as Hershey would lose, 1-0.

Bears Drop Fourth Straight, Lose 3-2 (SO)

The Hershey Bears are supposed to feed players to the parent club Washington Capitals, but on Saturday night it was the Bears fans who got to taste the “Cheese” again. Former Bears goaltender Daren Machesney returned to Hershey from South Carolina, playing his first game as a Bear since the 08-9 season. Dany Sabourin was called up to Washington, to back up the other Bears goaltender Braden Holtby, as the Caps finished the regular season against the Rangers. Machesney played well, but the Bears only picked up one point against Syracuse in a 3-2 shootout loss.

Pens Take Down Bears, 4-2 in Penalty-Laden Affair

As the season winds down, the Bears take to the ice to try and improve their position in the standings. No better chance to achieve this than to take down the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The first period left much to be desired from the Bears. Despite three power play chances, the Bears only mustered up four shots on goal. To make matters worse, the Penguins scored late in the period, just eight seconds into a power play.

Comeback Falls Short, Bears Lose 6-5 (SO)

Dany Sabourin looks back one of Binghamton’s goals (All photos by Kyle Mace)

After a rough night against St. John’s the night before, the Bears looked to bounce back and show they were just playing an April Fools joke a day early. That didn’t seem like the case at the start of the game. With Binghamton scoring within the first minute of each period, the Bears would be down three goals at some points. It sure looked like a loss, but Hershey being Hershey they scored three goals in the third period to get the one point. That would be the only point they would get as Bingo grabbed the other point as they beat Hershey in a shootout, 6-5.

Bears Trump Senators to Earn Seventh Straight Win

While many fans were heading to Fire Alley to watch the game last night, the Bears were up North, preparing to face off against the Binghamton Senators.

The Senators were the first on the board with a tally from Stephane DaCosta just over five minutes into the game. But Mike Carman tied it up by redirecting a feed from Bourque. Tomas Kundratek followed that up with a power play goal to give the Bears the lead going into the second period.
