The Charlotte Checkers and Bridgeport Sound Tigers play in front of absolutely no one

The Charlotte Checkers told their fans to stay home from Wednesday night’s game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to an unusual snowfall in the North Carolina city. With Charlotte not used to the snow, the Checkers felt the need to close the game to the public for safety reasons.

Rather than deal with the headache of rescheduling — Bridgeport travels for two straight games in Charlotte much like the Bears and other teams do — the show went on before an audience of zero fans.

Hershey kicks off 2018 with 5-1 victory over Charlotte (Photos)

The Charlotte Checkers visited Hershey for the first time since 2014 on Saturday as Hershey’s newest rivals in the Atlantic Division.

While it was the first visit by the Checkers in four years, Hershey was looking for their first win against Charlotte in Chocolate Town since 2012.

The Bears traded some good chances with the Checkers in the first period and came away scoreless after the first. Pheonix Copley made ten saves, and good defense kept the visitors off the board. The Bears only had three shots but had several attempts of their own blocked.

The South Carolina Stingrays, the top ECHL affiliate of the Hershey Bears and Washington Capitals, had a rough start to the Kelly Cup Finals, in a game that began in the evening last Friday and went into the early hours of Saturday morning. The Stingrays dropped Game 1 in double overtime to the Colorado Eagles, 3-2. The Stingrays lost the second game by the same count on Sunday night, thanks to a late Colorado goal.

The South Carolina Stingrays, the ECHL affiliate of the Hershey Bears, are just one win away from the Kelly Cup Finals after defeating the Manchester Monarchs 3-1 on Saturday. The win gives them a 3-2 edge in the series, with Game Six on Monday night.

The South Carolina Stingrays tied their series with Manchester Friday night as they picked up a 2-1 win behind goals from Andrew Cherniwchan and Rob Flick, along with Parker Milner making 33 saves on 34 shots. The win puts South Carolina, the only remaining team in affiliation with the Washington Capitals playing playoff hockey, two wins away from heading back to the Kelly Cup Finals.
